Discover Claremont Invites Visitors to Celebrate Claremont Heritage’s 43rd Annual Home Tour Weekend, October 10–12, 2025

Claremont Modern Header

CLAREMONT, CA – Mid-century magic meets modern discovery as Claremont Heritage presents its 43rd Annual Home Tour Weekend, October 10–12, 2025. Sponsored in part by Discover Claremont, this three-day celebration of architecture, culture, and preservation invites visitors to experience the city’s modernist treasures—and to stay in one of Southern California’s most vibrant destinations.

The weekend kicks off Friday with a Claremont Bus and Walking Tour led by pop culture humorist Charles Phoenix. Known for celebrating classic and kitschy American life and style, Phoenix brings his trademark wit and storytelling to this three-hour tour.

On Friday evening, Sunset Magazine partners with Claremont Heritage to present the Sunset Reception at the historic M.H. Cowen House, designed by Cliff May, father of the California Ranch house. Built in 1939, the Hacienda Ranch recently won the 2025 Preservation and Restoration Award from the California Preservation Foundation.

Saturday highlights include a Places of Worship Tour, featuring four architecturally significant sites designed by Richard Neutra, Edward Durell Stone, Theodore Criley (with art direction from Millard Sheets) and Culver Heaton. The tour is presented as part of Docomomo National Tour Day, an annual celebration of modern architecture and design.

Other events include a lunch talk from historian and author Alan Hess on “Claremont Modern,” and an exhibition and reception titled “The Search for Organic Architecture,” honoring Foster Rhodes Jackson, a Frank Lloyd Wright protégé who designed over 800 modern structures in Claremont and surrounding towns.

On Sunday, the signature Home Tour, “Preserving the Recent Past,” opens doors to seven unique Claremont residences that showcase mid-century modern and ranch styles. Highlights include a Jo Paul Rognstad-designed masterwork, and the homes of Charles Phoenix and management pioneer Peter Drucker. Rognstad would later design 18 skyscrapers that transformed Honolulu’s skyline. This docent-led tour runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and visitors should plan on up to four hours to visit all seven homes.

Make it a weekend escape. After each day’s events, visitors can explore Claremont’s tree-lined Village with its boutique shops, chef-driven dining, and inviting patios. Stroll the California Botanic Garden, browse The Benton Museum of Art at Pomona College, or linger over Sunday brunch before heading home. Hotel rooms for this weekend are limited; check availability at DiscoverClaremont.com.

Both productions are performed in repertory, alternating each night from July 11 through July 21, 2024, at the Sontag Greek Theatre, the historic outdoor venue located on the grounds of Pomona College in Claremont.

Prior to each performance, the venue will open early to accommodate picnickers. Concessions including craft beer, wine and snacks will be available. About La Tempestad (The Tempest) by William Shakespeare

A story of betrayal, forgiveness, and magic. This bilingual adaptation of The Tempest is adapted and directed by Beatrice Casagrán with original music by Andres Vadin and Arturo Stable and is set on Isla de Pinos off the Coast of Cuba. This high energy production with choreography by Kati Hernández brings a Latin vibe to Shakespeare’s most magical comedy.

Próspera is the Governor of Cuba and secretly an Iyanifa, (Ifá priestess) a role forbidden to women. Antonio, her jealous and ambitious brother plots with Alonso, the Viceroy of Nueva España to overthrow and exile Próspera. They accuse of her being a witch, Sycorax, assault her and banish her and her 3 year old daughter, Miranda, out to sea. Próspera’s ship sinks but she and Miranda are washed on onshore on Isla de Pinos when Ariel (Yemayá) intercedes to help them. Eighteen years later, a ship is caught in a violent storm with Alonso and Antonio on board. Próspera, tells her daughter, Miranda, that she has caused the storm with her magical powers. Próspera and Miranda are served by Ariel and by Caliban, who unbeknownst to him is Próspera’s son born of her rape and cursed by her rage. Próspera sinks Alonso and Antonio’s ship but saves their lives so that they wash ashore on her island where she can settle accounts.

About The Knight of the Burning Pestle by Francis Beaumont

A group of thespians present a romantic play about star-crossed lovers… well… they would if the audience would just shut up. A rowdy grocer and his wife demand a different play starring their apprentice. The company must now perform two plays: the romance, and an improvised chivalric adventure complete with knights, giants, and sick dance moves.

Enjoy a night of comedy and chaos with our hilarious take on this 17th century parody.
